Two required solos in an advancing flutist’s repertoire are the Bach Partita and the C.P.E. Bach Sonata in A minor. World class flutist Gary Schocker has prepared his own teaching editions of these works, but has added a “ghost,” a teacher play-along part, that supports the student’s playing and encourages a more aware musicality. “This edition was prepared with one ear toward polyphony and the other towards my (modern) flute. That is, these articulations and dynamics help bring out the inherent counterpoint and make the Bach Sonata feel easier to play. Generally speaking, the appoggiaturas (unslashed grace notes) are played on the beat, and given the duration shown, but part of the charm of an appoggiatura is the opportunity to lean a little differently each time.” (Gary Schocker)
